Porn descends.
The Exxxotica Convention is this weekend and a swarm of porn stars descend on our city like so many surgically enhanced locusts. Super shady...but this coupled with the revelation that some people I know have well-paying jobs within the porn industry make me wonder if this is the sort of backbone of sustainability we need to have a thriving regional film scene down here. Miami was at the center of the internet porn revolution, and is still the home to most of the biggest companies. There is never a lack of work in porn, regardless of the economy. Right now the biggest problem with keeping filmmakers in Miami is the lack of conistent, paying work. Lucrative gigs in porn can sustain artists and fund serious film projects. If the directors are creating work in town, this creates more work for actors (no need to get nakey) and so on and so forth. Or maybe it's all just shady...but then again the shady cocaine trade made Miami what it is today and allowed legitimate business to flourish, so who's to say that legitimacy built on shade isn't the way to get things done in Miami?
